Technology Talent from Visa Share Skills with Students
Employees from Visa’s technology team went back to school on Tuesday 2 July to run an action-packed day of workshops for Year 9 pupils at King Solomon Academy.
Over the course of the day the King Solomon students enjoyed introductions to robotics and app design, as well as learning more about the range of careers in the digital sector.
During the robotics session the students worked in teams to construct and programme their own robots, which then went head-to-head completing an obstacle course in a fiercely fought competition.
Stereotypes were challenged in the job roles session. Students watched the volunteers take on different occupations in an enthusiastically performed role play, before discussing their different skill sets and the relevance of these to the tech sector.
The afternoon session saw the students designing apps to either support the charity sector or improve life at school. Ideas included revision toolkits, anti-bullying and mental health-based apps; as well as two designed to ease charity giving. Each group presented their ideas, before students voted for their favourite.
The day culminated with a prize giving for the most successful teams; as well as individual recognition for students who had gone above and beyond - working hard to lead their teams and asking perceptive questions.
At this point the students were asked to vote on whether they would be interested in a career in technology. The group had been asked the same question at the start of the day. There was a 35% increase in interest amongst the girls and 10% amongst the boys - a clear sign the day had been a success.
"It was wonderful to see how the students developed their knowledge of the range of careers available in the technology sector whilst also developing key employability skills and enjoying great activities with the Visa volunteers." Camilla Al-Hariri, Head of University and Career Service, King Solomon Academy
"It was a very rewarding experience to volunteer at a school local to our Paddington office, share experiences from our career journeys in technology and be able to make a difference. Besides helping the young people broaden their horizons, I have personally learnt a lot about school life and the teaching profession by leading this event. All in all, an amazing experience for all of us involved." Deepa Nayak, Test Specialist, Visa.
