Perfect weather for our volunteer gardeners from Kingfisher
In August 2017, a team of employees from Kingfisher battled through torrential downpours on their volunteer day; fashioning outfits from bin bags in an attempt to protect themselves from the rain and eventually had to admit defeat and bid an early retreat. Undeterred, the group returned almost a year to the day later and were blessed with perfect weather for a morning’s gardening at Penfold Community Hub and an afternoon tea party with the residents.
The group took on the task of removing the weeds in one large bed, placing a lining on top of the soil to inhibit future growth and covering with bark chippings; as well as sanding and painting eight benches, weeding and jet washing the paved areas.
After a stop for lunch in the garden, the group hosted a tea party for the residents. They served cups of tea and coffee and an extensive selection of biscuits, which were quickly tucked into.
"I really enjoyed our day at Penfold Community Hub. It was so rewarding to see the results achieved in such a short space of time and how much the residents enjoy spending time in the garden. It was lovely to have the chance to spend time chatting with them in the afternoon" (Kingfisher employee).
The group are already planning their return. Having decided they cannot possibly wait a whole year, they hope to be back in December to put up the Penfold decorations and spread a little Christmas spirit.
As terrifying as it is to be thinking about the Yuletide festivities, they’ll be here before you know it. If you would like help organising a team volunteering day alongside your other Christmas celebrations in the office, please contact our Community Programme Manager, Emily.
