Brunel’s Roof gets a £20m makeover
Work has started to repair the historic spans of Grade 1 listed Paddington Station’s magnificent roof. A £20 million project by Network Rail will improve the internal appearance and environment by strengthening steelwork, repairing the original wrought iron structure and decorative scrolls, and upgrading the lighting system.
The first phase, repairing the barrel roof or 4th span, was completed in July 2011. While repairs are underway the visual impact will be minimised, with cladding applied to the existing span structures. Work is due to be completed by January 2016.
