Brunel tells the Paddington Story
Over 180 guests were treated to tours of Paddington by Brunel on 20 and 21 September as part of London Open House.
Brunel led six separate 90-minute walks around Paddington over two days, starting with Paddington Central, the site of his original station in 1838, before moving to Eastbourne Terrace to explain the engineering techniques being employed Crossrail in constructing London’s biggest infrastructure project.
In Brunel’s magnificent Paddington Station, now Grade 1 listed, guests heard about his vision for the Great Western Railway, and watched Brunel uncover the station’s architectural and engineering secrets.
At Merchant Square, Heatherwick’s Rolling Bridge and the newest edition to Paddington, the Fan Bridge, were both in action to demonstrate Paddington’s continuing dominance in engineering and construction innovation.
